Break Through the Mood in Minutes

I recently attended an event for Yogi/Author Dave Romanelli and the launch of his new book, “Happy is the New Healthy”. Dave’s a very talented and funny man, and he didn’t disappoint the crowd with his hilarious stories as an awkward teenager to his inspiring tips on slowing down, smiling more, and enjoying the present moment.

As a Health Coach, I agree with Dave that happiness does play an important role when it comes to good health. When nutrition clients come in for guidance, often times their diet isn’t the only thing out of balance. For many, their life is on fast-forward and they are exhausted. Eventually, this lack of energy not only takes a toll on their physical body, but it can also alter their mood, which in turn can effect their relationships and overall quality of life.

So how do we get off the hamster wheel so we can create more positive energy in our lives? Well, there are 1,440 minutes in a day, so you could begin the process by taking just a few of those minutes to:

  • Breathe. 5 deep inhales and exhales change beta brain waves (stress mode) into alpha brain waves (rest & digest), also producing a creative state of mind.
  • Listen to music that is personally enjoyable. Music especially classics, have been shown to reduce negative emotions and fatigue.
  • Get out in Nature. The positive effects of nature improve mood and reduce stress.
  • Visit an art gallery. Studies have shown art can actually create as much joy in the brain as being head over heels in love!
  • Smile. Smiling releases dopamine and serotonin in the brain, sparking a feeling of happiness.
