DIY Antibacterial Mat Cleaner

How to Make Your Own Antibacterial Yoga Mat Cleaner

Since the pandemic, we’ve had to make some changes at the studio and no longer provide mat cleaning spray for students to use after class. Instead of purchasing a mat cleaning product to sell in the studio, I felt this simple recipe was easy to make and will keep your mat safe and clean whether you are back at the studio or practicing in your home.

How do the oils work to clean your mat?

  • Tea tree oil possesses antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal properties.
  • Lavender oil relieves stress and anxiety and is also used as a disinfectant for skin and hair.
  • Lemongrass oil improves mood and has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties.
  • Eucalyptus oil has potent properties, which include deodorant, antiseptic, and antibacterial.

Here’s the recipe I use:

  • Use an 8oz plastic bottle (PET)
  • 3/4 cup distilled water
  • 1/4 Witch Hazel
  • 15 drops of tea tree oil
  • 10 drops of Lavender oil
  • 10 drops of Lemongrass oil or Eucalyptus oil (optional)

Combine water & witch hazel in a glass measuring cup or beaker. Add essential oils. Stir with a glass swizzle stick. Carefully pour into a bottle.

Spray your mat liberally after you practice and wipe it down.
