Holiday Season: How To Indulge Yourself

With the holidays come family gatherings, meeting up with friends, office parties, and other events, sweet treats, comfort foods and cocktails. Eating is a very social activity, and social interaction is explicitly tied not just to our mental health but also our physical health. Studies have shown social engagement is associated with a stronger immune system. So how do you indulge yourself and still feel good?

If you’re at a holiday event, think of it as a very special occasion. Enjoy the company you are with, then give your-self permission to enjoy the food in a moderate way. Load up on the veggies, and be sure to eat some protein. Savor a 2-3 bites of what’s being offered, and acknowledge that you had it. Have a small portion of dessert.

Then move on and get back to your normal eating routine the next day.

Remember, connection during the holidays is just as important as the number on the scale.

Here are some additional tips to keep you feeling great during your holiday season:

  • Stay Hydrated. Drink at least half your body weight in ounces. You can also eat your water by filling up on fresh fruits and veggies.
  • Keep Moving. Exercise for pleasure. Try to move 30 minutes to 1 hour, 3 times per week. Walk, run, yoga, dance, play- just pick something you enjoy doing.
  • Digestive Enzymes and Probiotics  can be helpful in combating GI problems such as indigestion, bloating, constipation or diarrhea. Digestive enzymes help keep your gut healthy and help to break down your food for proper absorption.
  • Sleep. Sleep deprivation impairs the body’s ability to use insulin, the hormone responsible for keeping stable blood sugar levels. Most people need between 7-9 hours and chances are you already know what your number is.
  • Sugar. If you’re going to have some, take a B-Complex supplement, some chromium and lots of vitamin C whenever you eat or drink sugar. It will greatly help to even out your mood and your blood sugar levels.
  • Have Fun!!
