The annual Pinterest’s Predicts report says Americans are developing a crush on cabbage, and is poised to be this year’s breakout health food. The online search numbers back it up, too.
Why Cabbage is a Superfood
It’s easy to see why as it’s low in calories, salt and sugar and is nutrient-rich. However, it’s not a new trend as I’ve been extolling the benefits of cabbage for decades for it’s fiber, antioxidants, and Vitamin C. In fact, just one cup of raw green cabbage delivers 54% of your daily vitamin C — essential for collagen production, wound healing, immunity, and iron absorption!
Cabbage is packed with antioxidants that help fight inflammation, a big contributor to metabolic disease. It also contains a healthy dose of potassium, which helps keep blood pressure in check, and plant sterols that can reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol and lower heart-disease risk.
And finally, cabbage’s plant sterols and fiber also boost digestive health, feeding the good bacteria in your gut that support immunity and produce vital nutrients.
How to Enjoy Cabbage
Now that you’ve discovered how amazing cabbage is, go ahead and start enjoying. You can find some delicious, healthy cabbage recipes on the Behealthyoga website: Cabbage Crunch, Cabbage Soup, and Okonomyaki (Japanese pancake).
Keep in mind, food can have a tremendous impact on your health; if you’re new to eating cruciferous vegetables, like cabbage, it’s best to slowly introduce these vegetables and gradually ramp up as they can cause gas, bloating and diarrhea.
Note: Cabbage can interfere with certain medications, primarily those in the following categories: blood thinners, diabetes or thyroid-talk to your health provider before increasing your intake as the vitamin K in cabbage can interfere with the effectiveness of the medications.
