The German practice of “lüften” has recently gone viral, trending on Google, TikTok, Instagram and Meta. “Lüften” roughly translates to “ventilate” or “airing out” and involves just that — opening windows (even in the winter) and doors on opposite sides of the house for 5–10 minutes, to create cross-ventilation to eliminate stale air.
Why Spring Lüften is Beneficial
After a winter of keeping windows sealed, spring is the perfect time to flush out accumulated contaminants like dust, pet dander, and carbon dioxide.
As weather warms, moisture can build up. Short, intense ventilation helps remove humidity and prevents mold growth, especially after cooking or showering.
Western Oregon University suggests 10-15 minutes of open windows for spring and autumn, whereas winter needs less and summer needs more.
Are there health benefits?
Experts say lüften actually works. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends opening windows to reduce the concentration of volatile organic compounds in the home, which are released by a vast array of household items, including furniture, mattresses, cosmetics and cleaning products. These compounds can cause adverse reactions like headaches, itchy eyes and breathing problems.
According to Dr. Parham Azimi, research Associate, at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, there’s also reason to believe airing out a home regularly could help control household mold.
Dr. Joshua Nosanchuk, a professor and microbiology researcher at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and an infectious disease physician at Montefiore Health System, said that better ventilation could eliminate many airborne toxins that cause people irritation in the U.S.
Tips for House Burping Your Home in the Spring
- Time it Right: Mid-morning or early evening is usually best, especially for minimizing pollen intake.
- Use Cross-Ventilation: Open windows or doors on opposite sides of the house to create a quick, efficient draft.
- Avoid High Pollen/Traffic: If you have severe allergies or live near high traffic, check air quality reports before opening windows.
And while house burping may be all the rage, don’t overdo it. The point is a quick exchange of air (5-10 minutes) rather than keeping windows open all day, which can ruin energy efficiency.
